World of the Copts
Coptic Christians are really no different than you or me. However, they live in an area of the world that is dominated by Muslims. Being a Christian makes you a minority in Egypt. They have a very strong sense of family. Members work together as a team.
Responsibility is divvied up among all of the family as soon as the children are old enough to handle it. This pattern is not exclusive to Copts, though, as it is seen in most Muslim units as well. Fathers tend to be a bit more authoritative within the home. The fathers ordinarily exemplify the ideals of their faith. They teach their children how to pray, how to sing hymns, and everything else they need to know about their religion.
Women emulate the female figures they hold dear. They are inspired by the tales of heroic virgins and strong, loving mothers. In the Coptic faith, marriage is one of the seven sacraments, as it is believed to fulfull the union between man and God. Women are not meant to serve as a source of pleasure for their husbands, but rather as a partner to help them when they need it. Many Copts name their children after important biblical figures or saints. As an infant, they are baptized. They receive godparents who are tasked with making sure the children learn about their faith and are instilled with the proper ideals.
Copts make a living the same way the average person would. They hold a variety of jobs in many different fields. Unfortunately, due to the persecution they face, they are sometimes kept out of jobs in the public sector and government.
