Copts and Their Neighbors

To say that the Copts don't live in harmony with their neighbors would be a drastic understatement. Because they are Egyptians who follow the Christian faith, they are seen as minorities. Sadly, they have suffered from persecution for thousands of years. Copts are the victims of many crimes, such as extortion and kidnapping. Muslims are extremely violet against Copts, even going so far as to murdering them. This was escalated back in August of 2012, when a letter called "El Fegr" was posted, which called Christians "enemies of Allah's religion and slaves of the cross". The letter encourages Allah to curse the Christians and for those following the Muslim faith to attack/kill Egyptian Christians until they decide to convert to Islam.

The government doesn't treat Copts very fairly, either. It doesn't even recognize conversions from the Islamic faith to Christianity. Some marriages between people of different religions are not allowed, either. Christians are required to get official approval in order to build churches. The government supposedly takes their time in granting such approvals.

It is also difficult to Copts to find employment in certain fields, particularly government. There are not many Copts being hired for law enforcement jobs, public office, or state security.
